Ingredients

  • 1 block (14-16 oz) extra-firm or super-firm tofu, pressed
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch (for tofu coating)
  • 2 tablespoons neutral oil (e.g., canola, vegetable, or avocado oil), for frying
  • For the Honey Garlic Sauce:
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup low-sodium soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 3-4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch (for sauce thickening)
  • 2 tablespoons cold water (for cornstarch slurry)
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil (optional, for added flavor)
  • Optional garnishes: sesame seeds, chopped green onions

Instructions

  1. Press the tofu for at least 30 minutes (or longer) to remove excess water. Cut the pressed tofu into 1-inch cubes.
  2. In a medium bowl, gently toss the tofu cubes with 2 tablespoons of cornstarch until evenly coated. This will help them achieve a crispy exterior.
  3. Heat 2 tablespoons of neutral oil in a large non-stick skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the tofu in a single layer, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan. Cook for 5-7 minutes, flipping occasionally, until golden brown and crispy on all sides. Remove the crispy tofu from the skillet and set aside.
  4. While the tofu cooks, prepare the honey garlic sauce. In a small bowl, whisk together the honey, low-sodium soy sauce, rice vinegar, minced garlic, and grated ginger (if using).
  5. In a separate tiny bowl, whisk 1 tablespoon of cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of cold water to create a slurry. Set aside.
  6. Lower the heat to medium. Pour the honey garlic sauce mixture into the same skillet (no need to clean). Bring to a simmer, stirring constantly. Once simmering, whisk in the cornstarch slurry. Continue to cook and stir for 1-2 minutes until the sauce thickens to your desired consistency.
  7. Remove the skillet from the heat and stir in the sesame oil, if using.
  8. Add the crispy tofu back into the skillet with the thickened sauce. Gently toss until all the tofu cubes are thoroughly coated in the delicious honey garlic glaze.
  9. Serve immediately over rice or noodles, garnished with sesame seeds and chopped green onions, if desired.
