Ingredients
- 1 block (14-16 oz) extra-firm or super-firm tofu, pressed
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch (for tofu coating)
- 2 tablespoons neutral oil (e.g., canola, vegetable, or avocado oil), for frying
- For the Honey Garlic Sauce:
- 1/4 cup honey
- 1/4 cup low-sodium soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
- 3-4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger (optional)
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch (for sauce thickening)
- 2 tablespoons cold water (for cornstarch slurry)
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil (optional, for added flavor)
- Optional garnishes: sesame seeds, chopped green onions
Instructions
- Press the tofu for at least 30 minutes (or longer) to remove excess water. Cut the pressed tofu into 1-inch cubes.
- In a medium bowl, gently toss the tofu cubes with 2 tablespoons of cornstarch until evenly coated. This will help them achieve a crispy exterior.
- Heat 2 tablespoons of neutral oil in a large non-stick skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the tofu in a single layer, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan. Cook for 5-7 minutes, flipping occasionally, until golden brown and crispy on all sides. Remove the crispy tofu from the skillet and set aside.
- While the tofu cooks, prepare the honey garlic sauce. In a small bowl, whisk together the honey, low-sodium soy sauce, rice vinegar, minced garlic, and grated ginger (if using).
- In a separate tiny bowl, whisk 1 tablespoon of cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of cold water to create a slurry. Set aside.
- Lower the heat to medium. Pour the honey garlic sauce mixture into the same skillet (no need to clean). Bring to a simmer, stirring constantly. Once simmering, whisk in the cornstarch slurry. Continue to cook and stir for 1-2 minutes until the sauce thickens to your desired consistency.
- Remove the skillet from the heat and stir in the sesame oil, if using.
- Add the crispy tofu back into the skillet with the thickened sauce. Gently toss until all the tofu cubes are thoroughly coated in the delicious honey garlic glaze.
- Serve immediately over rice or noodles, garnished with sesame seeds and chopped green onions, if desired.
