Ingredients
- 1 (10.75-ounce) can condensed cream of mushroom soup
- 1/2 cup beef broth (for the squares)
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 (12-ounce) package Hawaiian sweet rolls (e.g., King’s Hawaiian)
- 1 pound thinly sliced deli roast beef
- 8 slices provolone cheese (or Swiss)
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 tablespoon poppy seeds (optional)
- For the Au Jus:
- 1 (14-ounce) can beef broth
- 1 packet au jus mix (e.g., McCormick)
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the condensed cream of mushroom soup, 1/2 cup beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and garlic powder until smooth. Set aside.
- Separate the Hawaiian rolls into two halves horizontally, keeping the bottoms attached in a single sheet and the tops in a single sheet. Place the bottom halves of the rolls in the prepared baking dish.
- Layer the thinly sliced roast beef evenly over the bottom rolls.
- Arrange the slices of provolone cheese over the roast beef.
- Place the top halves of the rolls over the cheese layer.
- Pour the soup mixture evenly over the tops of the rolls.
- In a separate small bowl, melt the butter. Brush the melted butter over the tops of the rolls. Sprinkle with poppy seeds, if desired.
- Cover the baking dish loosely with aluminum foil and bake for 20 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake for another 5-10 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and the tops of the rolls are lightly golden.
- While the squares are baking, prepare the au jus. In a small saucepan, combine the 14-ounce can of beef broth, au jus mix packet, and onion powder. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat and keep warm.
- Once baked, remove the French Dip Squares from the oven and let them rest for a few minutes. Cut into individual squares and serve immediately with the warm au jus for dipping.
